I Reviewed Five Castile Soaps to Find Out Which One Is Actually Clean. Here Is What I Found.

Most liquid soaps sold as “pure castile” have at least one of three problems.

Many 'pure castile' soaps lead with a natural oil but conceal a synthetic thickener, preservative, or palm derivative, dilute the formula for a concentrated look, and label synthetic scents as “natural” instead of using genuine essential oils.

The result: bottles empty quickly, skin doesn’t improve, and labels promise more than the formula delivers.

I reviewed five of the most widely available castile soaps on the market, evaluating ingredient quality, formula transparency, palm oil status, scent sourcing, and skin-specific formulations. Of the five, one was built to a different standard from the start.

#1 Dr. Jacobs Naturals Almond Soft Skin Castile Body Wash

Dr. Jacobs Naturals was started in Brooklyn in 2011 by Joe Aini after they could not find a soap gentle enough for their son’s eczema. That origin is not marketing copy. It is visible in every decision the formula makes.

The base oils are olive and coconut, both antioxidant-rich, and palm oil is explicitly excluded. Viscosity comes from sea salt, not synthetic foaming agents or thickeners. Aloe vera and Vitamins A and E are added to nourish and replenish skin. The sweet almond scent, sourced from natural almonds, elevates the senses, soothes irritated skin, and helps maintain the skin’s natural balance for a healthy glow. The Castile Body Wash is certified hypoallergenic, dermatologist-tested, concentrated, and biodegradable, specifically formulated for sensitive to very dry skin conditions, including eczema. No artificial fragrances or dyes. No parabens. No petrochemicals. No sulfates. No phthalates. Gluten-free, cruelty-free, vegan, and made in the USA.

The line comes in seven scents, each built on the same clean base formula. Almond Soft Skin softens and soothes with a subtle, sweet fragrance that helps maintain the skin’s natural balance. Lavender Wind-Down is formulated for a calming wash to close out the day. Peppermint Energy is built for an invigorating morning routine. Sandalwood Reset offers a grounding, warm scent suited to daily use. Rose Glow carries a light floral fragrance with the same skin-nourishing base. Shea Butter Hydration is the richest option in the range, formulated specifically for deep moisture. Orange and Ginger Boost delivers a bright, energizing scent for those who prefer a citrus-forward wash. Every variant ships with free delivery on orders over $40 across the contiguous USA.

#2 Seven Minerals Pure Castile Soap

Seven Minerals uses organic oils exclusively and contains no palm oil. It is the only soap in this review that includes organic castor oil, which the brand states helps soothe inflammation and benefits skin prone to eczema, psoriasis, or acne. The base formula is unscented, vegan, Non-GMO, and made in the USA. Seven Minerals states the soap is 2-3x more concentrated than regular liquid soaps and is designed to be diluted before use. A 90-day money-back guarantee applies.

Seven Minerals is formulated as a multi-purpose concentrate that requires dilution before use rather than a ready-to-apply body wash. Its base formula contains no aloe vera, Vitamin A, or Vitamin E, all of which Dr. Jacobs Naturals specifically includes to nourish and replenish skin. Buyers who want a natural scent built into the formula will also find it absent here; fragrance must be purchased separately.

#3 Dr. Natural Liquid Castile Soap

Dr. Natural offers castile soap across five scents: Lavender, Peppermint, Almond, Eucalyptus, and Scent-Free. The product is USDA Certified, cruelty-free, vegan, and sulfate-free. Added ingredients include Organic Shea Butter, Rosemary Extract, and Vitamin E. At $7.49 for 16oz, it is the lowest-priced option in this review.

One factual note from the ingredient list: the formula includes Elaeis Guineensis Kernel (Palm Kernel) Oil. Buyers specifically looking for a palm-free castile soap should factor this in. The Almond variant lists Prunus Dulcis (Almond) Fragrance as a fragrance compound rather than a natural fragrance.

Ingredients (Almond): Water, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Elaeis Guineensis Kernel (Palm Kernel) Oil, Potassium Hydroxide, Glycerin, Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Citric Acid, Prunus Dulcis (Almond) Fragrance, Organic Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Tocopherol, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract.

Three differences are visible directly from the ingredient lists. Dr. Natural contains Palm Kernel Oil; Dr. Jacobs Naturals contains none. Dr. Natural uses Hydroxyethylcellulose, a synthetic thickener; Dr. Jacobs Naturals uses sea salt. The almond scent in Dr. Natural is listed as a fragrance compound rather than a natural fragrance, as Dr. Jacobs Naturals uses.

#4 Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Pure Castile Liquid Soap

Dr. Bronner's is one of the most recognized castile soap brands on the market and carries genuine credentials: made with over 70% certified organic and fair trade ingredients, EWG Verified, packaged in a 100% post-consumer recycled bottle, free from synthetic detergents and foaming agents, and concentrated to 3x the strength of most liquid soaps. The peppermint scent is derived from organic peppermint oil, described by the brand as cooling to the skin, clearing the sinuses, and sharpening the mind.

The soap is marketed as an 18-in-1 product suitable for face, body, hair, laundry, pets, dishes, and household cleaning when diluted as directed.

Two points stand out from a direct comparison. First, Dr. Bronner's ingredient list includes Organic Palm Kernel Oil; Dr. Jacobs Naturals contains no palm oil in any form. Second, Dr. Bronner's is an all-purpose concentrate built for dilution across many uses, not a dedicated body wash. It does not include aloe vera or Vitamin A, both of which Dr. Jacobs Naturals adds specifically for skin nourishment, and it does not carry any hypoallergenic or dermatologist-tested certification for sensitive or eczema-prone skin.

#5 Carolina Castile Soap

Carolina Castile Soap builds its formula around organic olive oil as the primary ingredient, blending it with organic coconut oil, Fair Trade Organic Cocoa Butter, and Kukui Nut Oil. The brand states it avoids synthetic thickeners, uses sea salt for consistency, and produces a more concentrated formula than the average castile soap. Made in the USA with no phthalates, parabens, animal testing, artificial dyes, or foaming agents.

At $22.95 for 32oz, Carolina Castile is the highest-priced option. Dr. Jacobs Naturals Almond Castile Body Wash is $21.95 for the same size, includes Vitamins A and E, uses a natural almond fragrance, and carries Non-GMO Project Certification.

The One Worth Buying

For a castile soap that’s clean, palm- and synthetic thickener-free, hypoallergenic, made for sensitive and eczema-prone skin, and available in seven scents,

Dr. Jacobs Naturals Castile Body Wash meets all these criteria.
